I was very interested to read this book about Bill Irwin, the first blind person to thru-hike the AT, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked. While I’m amazed that he and his guide dog, Orient, were able to do the hike, I am still fuzzy as to the details of how they did it. They had a good amount of help but also hiked on their own a lot and I just don’t understand how the dog kept them on the trail. Also offputting was Irwin’s constant references to God telling him what to do and causing things to happen for a reason, etc. I was raised with religion but that kind of talk just puts me off completely.
As a 79 yer old who has been active trail clearing
Etc. i found his book to be fascinating and believable. As i age, i experience God “ coming in the back door” whille ivwas always looking forward. Per haps CS Lewis’ book PILGRIMS REGRESS would be helpful. CL as Tolkein called him was an avid hiker in england and scotland along with his brother Warnie..♂️
