Trail Wish List

If I were to spend the rest of my life hiking, I could not possibly run out of trails. I’ve come up with a short(ish) list of trails I want to hike. It pretty much works like this: if I’ve heard of the trail, I want to hike it.

The Big Trails:

American Discovery Trail – 6,800 miles from coast to coast

Appalachian Trail – 2,186 miles from Georgia to Maine

Continental Divide Trail – 3,100 miles from Mexico to Canada up the Rockies

Pacific Crest Trail – 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada up California, Oregon, and Washington

Pacific Northwest Trail – 1,200 miles from the Continental Divide to the Pacific Ocean

North Country Trail – 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota

“Short” Long Distance Trails:

Cohos Trail – 162 miles through Northern New Hampshire

Colorado Trail – 486 miles through Colorado from Denver to Durango

Hayduke Trail – 812 miles through six National Parks on the Colorado Plateau in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona

Finger Lakes Trail – 560 miles across the Finger Lakes region of New York

John Muir Trail – 210 miles through the Sierra Nevada mountains in California

Long Trail – 272 miles up the length of Vermont; oldest long distance trail in the USA

Sierra High Route – 195 miles through the Sierra Nevada mountains in California; more rugged than the JMT

Trans Adirondack Route – 236 miles through Adirondack State Park in New York

Wonderland Trail – 93 miles around Mount Rainier in Washington

And this is not even getting into the international trails I want to hike in Iceland, Scotland, France, New Zealand, and more.

I will be knocking a few of the “short” trails off my list this year. Stay tuned.

  1. Maybe you wouldn’t run out of trails…but you’d probably run out of money to fund all these hikes 😉
